Final Reflection

One thing I'm very passionate about in life is Lifting weights. And for this project i wanted to do something related to that. Lifting weights and getting stronger goes hand and hand. And some of the best ways to get stronger in the weight room is By hard work, commitment, consistency, and Supplements. Supplements are Something that completes or enhances something else when added to it. Everyone can benefit from using supplements.


They’re not essential, and aren’t necessary and not using them won’t mean your time in the gym is wasted. However, for any aspiring bodybuilders, power lifters, strongmen, crossfitters, or any one who just wants to be big and strong, supplements are crucial. My goal for this project was to create a supplement and use it to help me get stronger.I had no idea where to start or if it was even possible to do without having to use special equipment/machines.


 After extensive research, I figured out how to make Whey Protein .Numerous studies show that it can help you increase strength, gain muscle and lose significant amounts of body fat. Whey is found in the watery portion of milk. When cheese is produced, the fatty parts of the milk coagulate and the whey is separated from it as a by-product. Whey protein is a liquid byproduct of cheese production that is sold as a dietary supplement in protein powders and shakes. I used a jar, strainer, a thin towel, and yogurt.


First: I put the strainer over the empty jar along with the very thin towel. Second: I got plain yogurt and poured it in to the strainer,the towel is there so the yogurt wouldn't go in to the jar. Third: I filled the strainer with yogurt, (jar is still empty) and put the jar inside of the refrigerator for 12 hours. After 12 hours i got the jar and there was a liquid inside of the jar. That was my Whey.


One of the results that i have noticed is the faster recovery from using whey. During a workout, particularly one involving intense strength training, your muscles experience  microscopic damage that breaks down muscle fiber. Following an exercise session, the protein you take in rebuilds these muscle fibers as your body recovers. And they come back bigger and stronger.
Recovery from the whey (protein) played a big role in my strength gainez, the faster I recovered, the faster i was able to get back to lifting heavy weights which resulted in Strength Gaines. I Believe this Project was successful, I made myself a supplement and used it to see adequate results in the weight room.

Background Information: Supplements

 

 

Whey protein is a mixture of proteins isolated from whey. Whey is the liquid part of milk that separates during cheese production. Milk actually contains two main types of protein… casein (80%) and whey (20%).Whey is found in the watery portion of milk. When cheese is produced, the fatty parts of the milk coagulate and the whey is separated from it as a by-product.If you’ve ever opened a yogurt container to see liquid floating on top, this is whey. Cheese makers used to discard it before they discovered its commercial value.

 

After being separated during cheese production, whey goes through a series of processing steps to become what people generally recognize as whey protein… a powder that is added to shakes, meal replacements and protein bars. Whey protein doesn’t taste very good on its own, which is why it is usually flavored. Chocolate, vanilla and strawberry flavored powders are popular. Taking whey protein is a convenient way to add 25-50 grams of protein on top of your daily intake. This can be important for bodybuilders and gym enthusiasts, as well as people who need to lose weight or are simply lacking protein in their diet. The best known use of whey protein supplements is for the purpose of increasing muscle mass and strength. Whey protein is popular among athletes, bodybuilders, fitness models, as well as people looking to improve their performance in the gym.

 

Everyone can benefit from using supplements. They’re not essential, and aren’t necessary and not using them won’t mean your time in the gym is wasted. The casual, gym goer, soccer mom, or middle aged man looking to simply get in shape likely wont have a protein powder, creatine or bcaa on their shopping list. Heck, I’d be surprised if they even knew what creatine and bcaa powder was. However, for any aspiring bodybuilders, power lifters, strongmen, or any one who just wants to be swole, such as myself, supplements are crucial. They are designed to supplement our diet, make hitting macros easier, make our life more convenient, and most importantly, enhance performance and gains. Bodybuilding supplements like whey aren’t magic. They’re not shortcuts. Anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to rip you off. However the use of supplements can definitely help, providing everything is in check.

 

Supplements are called supplements for a reason. They are supposed to fill the gaps in your whole food diet and help you get more from your efforts in the gym. They are not, nor will they ever be, a replacement for a proper diet or hard work. If you train hard enough, the work you perform in the gym will cause microscopic tears and trauma to your muscles. The work you do outside of the gym—eating, drinking water, stretching, supplementation, and especially sleeping—repairs this damage.

 

Why use Supplements? Researchers at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, took 19 men performing resistance training over a 10-week period and gave some of them 14 grams of whey and casein protein along with 6 grams of free amino acids, while giving the rest a 20-gram placebo. Those who consumed the whey had greater increases in fat-free mass and muscle strength. Numerous studies show that it can help you increase strength, gain muscle and lose significant amounts of body fat .However… whey is more than just protein. There are tons of other nutrients in there, some with potent biological effects. Whey protein has also been shown to have benefits for depression, blood pressure, blood sugar and even helping to treat symptoms of HIV and cancer.

3.     Is there and dangers/side effects of using supplements as a weight lifter or athlete?

 

US FDA reports 50,000 health problems a year due to dietary supplements [9] and these often involve bodybuilding supplements.

 Liver damage from dietary supplements has tripled in a decade, the majority of these involved bodybuilding supplements. This resulted in liver transplants and, in some cases, death to the patient.

 

4.     What are the different types of supplements athletes use?

 

Supplements commonly used include vitamins, minerals, protein, creatine, and various "ergogenic" compounds.

 

5.     How effective are supplements?

 

Dietary Supplements can be very effective as long as you work hard and have a healthy diet.

 

6.     Do you have to do any accessory work in order to get results from supplements?  

 

 

Yes, you can’t just wake up one day and start taking supplements without changing things and expecting to look like the hulk in a few weeks... You have to work very hard in your sport or in the gym and have a good diet in order to see results.

 

 

7.     If so what are things that can limit your results?

 

-         Not working hard enough.

-         Eating what you want when you want and how you want. You must have a healthy diet.

 

 

8.     Do you think supplements are important and should be uses to maximize results and help with recovering faster?

 

 

Yes the help a lot with recovery and results.

 

9.     At the end of the day would you recommend a supplement (Whey, Creatine, and Pre/Post Workout) to someone who asked you if they should use them?

LIQUID TO POWDER

In order to turn my liquid whey base in to a powder I will use Maltodextrin. Tapioca maltodextrin turns liquid in to powder.


 
 


How I will make a Supplement Based off Whey

 
Whey has many health benefits including beneficial cultures that aid in digestion by providing "good" bacteria to the gut. Whey is also an excellent source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. It is an important nutrient for those of us wishing to build or repair muscle tissue and also contributes to the prevention of atrophy of muscular cells.

 
1) Line a large strainer over a bowl with a clean cotton towel.
 




2) Pour in the kefir, buttermilk, and yogurt or separated milk. The whey will run into the bowl and the milk solids will stay in the strainer.Be sure the bowl is large enough to allow the strainer to hang over the bowl so that the curds don’t end up standing in the whey. Cover with a plate and let stand at room temperature for several hours (longer for yoghurt) until all the whey has drained.




3) The whey will end up in the bowl and you’ll have a soft cheese left in the cloth. Don’t throw this away! Most of us are familiar with the old nursery rhyme, "Little Miss Muffet"…eating her curds and whey. Well this is what she was eating! Use the cheese as a spread. To give it some flavor, add garlic, chives, onion, and spices, along with a bit of salt and pepper. Pour the whey into a glass jar and cover tightly. Refrigerated, the cream cheese keeps for approximately one month and the whey for about six months.





 
Tips: You can use homemade yogurt or good quality organic plain yogurt. If using raw milk, simply place it in a clean glass container and allow to stand covered with a lid at room temperature for 1-4 days until it separates (the amount of time will depend on how warm your kitchen is). The naturally occurring bacteria will turn it into cheese and whey on its own. If using yogurt, no advance preparation is necessary. Always keep whey on hand as it is an excellent starter culture for lacto-fermented veggies and fruits, soaking grains, and as a starter for beverages. Make whey from yogurt or fresh raw milk. If you have access to fresh raw milk, this is best.

When to Use

Since Whey Protein is quickly digested, the only time you would want to take whey protein alone is within 30 to 60 minutes after a strength-training based workout. At any other time, you would want to slow down the digestion of the protein by eating it with other foods. For example, if you want extra protein for breakfast, but don’t want eggs, you can add the whey protein powder to some oats, in various pancake recipes.
If on the other hand, you’re looking for a quick snack at work, you can have a shake with some nuts or fish oil to slow down the digestion of the protein. The combination of the fat will help slow down the digestion of the protein, thereby allowing insulin levels to stay level, while also stimulating CCK, which is a hormone that helps tell your body that you’re full.

Types of Whey

If you’ve ever gone to purchase a whey protein supplement, you may have felt a little confused by the different types out there and wonder why one brand may be so expensive and the other so “affordable.” This section will help filter through some of the main types of Whey protein.
There are three main types of whey protein: (1) Whey Protein Concentrate, (2) Whey Protein Isolate and (3) Whey Protein Hydrolysate. The differences between these three come down to how processed the protein is and hence the amount of protein present without any of the other qualities of dairy products such as fat, lactose (milk sugar), and various immunoglobulins.
  1. Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC) is generally the cheapest of the three and has the lowest amount of protein per 100 grams of the three types. Despite having the lowest protein content, it still has a very high percentage typically ranging from 55-89%. The other 11-45% is made up of fat, lactose and contains higher amounts of various immune-enhancing peptides such as alpha-lactalbumin and immunoglobulins.

  2. Whey Protein Isolate (WPI) has on average 95% of its weight coming from protein, with minimal lactose and fat. This is more expensive than concentrate and there are varying methods of filtration that can keep many of the beneficial qualities of the concentrate, although this generally costs more.

  3. Whey Protein Hydrolysate (WPH) is a further degraded protein that digests very quickly in the body and has about 99% of its weight coming from protein. This is the most expensive of the three and generally the worst tasting

Risk

Generally, most of the complications associated with whey protein intake have to do with digestive issues, such as gas, bloating, headaches, cramps and fatigue. None of these are generally considered life-threatening, more so than annoying complications.


Most of the literature has shown that if you’re experiencing any of have these symptoms, they are most likely due to either the lactose (found more in Whey Protein Concentrate) or sweeteners used more so than the whey protein itself. With that said, there are different methods of whey production, such as ion-exchanged that can influence how well your body can utilize the protein, leading to improper digestion of the whey itself.
The biggest fear often expressed about whey protein intake is that too much protein is “bad for the kidneys.” Research though has shown this is not true at all in healthy individuals. For those with known kidney disease, high protein diets can exacerbate pre-existing conditions. Healthy individuals, without any underlying or unknown kidney disease have nothing to worry about with higher intakes of protein.
What does occur with higher protein intakes is your body adapts to the increase in protein by increasing glomerular filtration rates (which means more fluid passes by your kidneys and there’s an increase in urine production).

Benefits of Whey Protein

While no supplement can replace a diet of whole, natural, unprocessed foods, whey protein can be useful for people with a very busy, on-the-go lifestyle as a supplement to their normal diet.
The benefits of a high-quality whey protein supplement range from purely aesthetic to health preserving. Here’s a small list of 10 benefits that have been associated with whey protein supplementation:
 
  • Weight Loss
  • Assists in increasing in muscle mass
  • Assist in cancer treatment
  • Increase in glutathione levels (your body’s main water-based anti-oxidant)
  • Decrease in HIV symptoms
  • Decrease in triglycerides
  • Decrease in total cholesterol while increasing HDL (good cholesterol)

    Specific amino acids are used by your body for specific reasons. For instance, whey protein is high in Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAA’s), which are 3 of the 9 essential amino acids that are of special importance for muscle repair and preservation. In both exercise and in recovery of exercise, your body will break down a small amount of amino acids for fuel (1-5%) and the specific amino acids your body uses are the BCAA’s. Although this is a small percentage overall, your body will break down muscle in order to get those BCAA’s. By providing the body with a high amount of BCAA’s, your body preserves your muscle, while the specific amino acid leucine actually stimulates protein synthesis.
    This means is that leucine sends a signal to your body to increase its storage of amino acids and the way your body primarily does this is by adding muscle.
    So if you’re trying to put on muscle, having enough BCAA’s is essential to both help preserve the muscle, while also helping to stimulate additional muscle growth. If you’re in a hypo-caloric state (if you’re trying to
    lose weight and are cutting calories), preserving muscle becomes even more important and ensuring that you have enough BCAA’s helps to keep your body from losing muscle, while simultaneously helping you to lose fat.
    Another huge benefit of whey protein is that studies have indicated that glutathione production increases. Although you may have heard of Vitamin C or Vitamin E as being anti-oxidants, what your body mainly uses as an anti-oxidant to scavenge free radicals is glutathione, making it one of the most important substances in your body. Glutathione is made from three main amino acids; cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine. The rate-limiting amino acid (what limits production of glutathione) is usually the amino acid cysteine, and although the exact mechanism with whey protein intake is not known, it is theorized that the relatively high amount of cysteine in whey is what increases glutathione production.

    Protein has gone through a number of phases over the years – from being used only by bodybuilders to now being used by athletes and casual exercisers at all levels. Whey protein used to be discarded by cheese manufacturers as a waste product.

    Whey protein is also a “complete protein” that is fast and easy to digest. Whenever we eat a protein source, our body uses the 20 amino acids (which are the individual components of “protein”) to repair our bones, muscles, organs and virtually every body part and tissue in the human body. When a source of protein has all 9 essential amino acids, which are amino acids your body needs to get from food, that food is said to be a complete protein. Foods like meats, dairy, eggs and rare vegetable proteins such as quinoa are complete proteins.     Not only do foods have different amino acid profiles, but the rate at which the protein is absorbed by your body can vary. Of the different measures of protein absorption, one of the most popular is Biological Value (BV). Whey protein just so happens to have the highest score possible with a Biological Value of 100. This means that whey protein contains all the amino acids needed to make a complete protein and is very easily digested by your body.

    PROPOSAL

     

     My plan is to create a supplement that will get you faster muscle building and a faster recovery I’ve chosen this topic because my biggest passion in life is lifting weights. Even though sometimes I have up and downs in the gym and take breaks I always come back and get strong(er). What is a supplement? A supplement is something that completes or enhances something else when added to it. Supplements make it much easier to get the necessary nutrients to build muscle and can even give you an advantage and enhance your training when taken right and combined with a good diet. 




    You can build a better body on a real good diet just like the guys back in the twentieth century , but to do so can take a lot of time, energy, and trips to the grocery store. Bodybuilding / weight lifting supplements are just some of the greatest things in the field of health and wellness. They are primarily composed of ingredients that will not only aid in improving your workout performance but also your body composition. Below I have research and found some of the benefits that you can get from these supplements if you correctly use them. They can help you replace your meals without compromising your nutritional needs. They encourage energy storage for your next workout sessions. Depending on how you use the supplement, this can help you gain or lose weight. Supplements are famous for facilitating muscle build-up. Aside from encouraging muscle build-up, they aid in strengthening your bones by developing bone mass. Also one of the most important things is that, they aid in hastening your muscle recovery. This is important because after every workout session, your muscles acquire micro tears from repeatedly lifting and carrying various weights. The supplements directly address the presence of micro tears by mending the areas with the help of the body's natural healing mechanisms. Resistance training can provide the stimulus for muscle growth, but unless you provide your body with the proper nutrients, you won't see results. Supplement protein may be more beneficial than other protein sources at promoting increases in muscle size and enhancing recovery from workouts.




    For my project my expert will be some I trust and known for almost two years. He is Mr. Rufh Palo Verde HS Head Football Coach. He is my expert because one of his main jobs is to develop players on the field and in the weight room and if anyone knows about strength it will be Coach Rufh. The outcome of my research will be a product (muscle building and recovery supplement) that I can use to maximize results and recovery. This topic is viable / has the ability to be successful because many Sports / Bodybuilding supplements have been created and tested and proven to work. Now I just have to find out how it's done and make it happen.

    Why Weight Lifting

    For many athletes like myself, when I first discovered weight lifting I was almost instantly hooked. It was almost therapeutic to me because when I entered a weight room all of my problems and worries went away and I focused on what I was doing. I got strong off the weight lifting alone. But I found out that in order to be better one of the greatest things you can do is assist your body by helping it repair and build muscles.     A few weeks ago I started the process of creating my own original supplement. The goal for this supplement is to maximize the muscles ability to recover from the abuse in the gym and to fill the tears in the muscle faster than other supplements so you can go back to the gym and lift hard everyday and get stronger.
